Currently, India is known as the “Diabetes Capital of the World”. Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become an important public health problem. In last few decades, incidence and the prevalence of diabetes have been gradually escalating and there has been significant increase in deaths from diabetes. In every 6 seconds a person dies from diabetes. Most of the deaths due to diabetes occurs in less than 60 years of age and comprises about 53% of all diabetes related deaths.5
